the PERSEUS Training Courses/Summer School

"CHALLENGE FOR GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL STATUS IN COASTAL WATERS"

Under the auspices of the EU-FP7 Project PERSEUS (Policy oriented environmental research in the southern European Seas), Southeren Branch of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences (SB SIO RAS) will host a traning courses/summer school (hereinafter - Courses) "Challenge for good environmental status in coastal waters" on basic problems of the Mediterranean and Black Sea coastal zones. Courses will be held in Russia at the Black Sea coast in Gelendzhik at the SB SIO RAS territory from 30 of June to 04 of July 2014.

The Project PERSEUS aims to develop scientific reasearch supporting the achievement of the "Good Environmental Status" (GES) in the Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. Such challenging task require the formulation of scientifically sound synthetic information about the state of the environment for informing policy makers and provide elements for the formulation of efficient environmental policy and management plans espacially for the marine coastal zone that is the most vulnerable object of increasing human-made pressures.

According to the PERSEUS Project objectives the Courses will share knowledge and experience between matured speciallists and young scientists dealing with studies of Mediterranean and Black Sea coastal zones. The participation in Courses of young professionals is essential to mobilize new talents and to broaden field of their expertise. The Courses will highlight new approaches in research and familiarize the participants with modern international activities. The Courses will contribute also to the creation of personal networks between participants from the European and Non-European countries that can be fruitful for future cooperation.

PRELIMINARY AGENDA OF THE COARSES

Who may apply?

The Training Courses/Summer School are open to young researchers, PhD and graduated students with a scientific background in physical, chemical, biological and engeneering oceanography, interested in expanding their field of interest. Applicants who are in a position to disseminate the experience gained from the training courses to others will be favored. Applications are accepted from both PERSEUS partner and non-partner institutions. The number of the scholarships are available for the 10-12 applicants. Partial financial coverage of travel costs by applicants is appreciated.

Applications need to be supported by:

  • A letter of recommendation (App. 3) signed by a senior official of the nominating entity, university, institution, national or regional organization.
  • A covering letter should describe the applicant's motivation for applying and state their ability to disseminate the knowledge and experience gained at the Courses to colleagues (in free form).
  • A curriculum vitae (in free form).
  • An abstract of a poster presentation (up to 20 lines) containing the results of applicant research related with the main topics of the Courses (optionally).

Selection criteria:

The selection will be based on the CV, the motivation for application and its relevance to Courses objectives. The selection will be done by the members of the PERSEUS Project Scientific Steering Committee and the candidates will be notified about the final results by e-mail. The list of the successful candidates will be also posted on the dedicated school web-sites.

Financial conditions:

Financial support will be available for 10-12 of participants to cover expenses (e.g. air fare tickets, accommodation and meals) to attend the school.
